Reflections on the Love of God

from Ephesians 3:18-19

Writing to the Christians in Ephesus, the Apostle Paul reminded them of his confidence in God, expressing the desire that they would not faint at the tribulation he was experiencing. He then prayed that they would be strengthened by the Spirit in the inner man and that – being rooted in God’s love – they might “…be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height…” of the love of Christ who dwells by faith in our hearts.

Paul wished that in our experiences we would grasp all of the aspects of Christ love and he described it as being wide, long, deep and high. I pondered long upon the four dimension of this love divine and what they meant to me personally.

God’s love is WIDE. It is all encompassing, spreading as it extends in degree, space, time or communication in order to reach the heart of men and women

God’s love is LONG . Its duration has no end, it’s everlasting. “…I have loved thee with an everlasting love…” Jer 31:3

There is no distance too long for this love. It will to the farthest corners of the earth in its pursuing . It is longsuffering in its patience, therefore He waits and never gives up, watching for the prodigal to come home. Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD. Jer 31:20

God’s love is DEEP. Its capacity to penetrate is infinite. It will pierce the depth of darkness, it will infiltrate obscurity not easily explored but known unto Him who reads the mind and the heart of man. It will make its way into the depth of the winter seasons of one’s life until the coldness of despair turns into hope renewed. It will go even as deep as the abyss to rescue one soul.

The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. Jonah 2:5-6

God’s love is HIGH. Lofty in its elevation, the vehemence of God’s love reaches the utmost degree in exertion or in violence as in passion, ardor, folly, and zeal.

Jesus demonstrated the height of this Love when he went into the Temple and began to cast out the money changers. (Luke 19:45-48)

“…the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up…” Ps 69:9

Isaiah prophesied about Christ love in this manner: “ For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. Isa 59:17

The everlasting love of Christ for the sinners reached the depth of the infernal regions. It plunged from the Highest heaven to the lowest hell to extend itself far and wide snatch from evil, heal and restore the fallen human race.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 8:35-39
